Steelfort is a long established, well respected, privately owned manufacturing and distribution company with their head office based in Palmerston North. An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Fitter Turner with Toolmaking experience to join their team.

You will be required to undertake work for all departments of their manufacturing facility.

The position will be based in their LawnMaster powered garden equipment Research and Development (R&D) workshop and will work closely alongside the R&D department.

Key duties include:

  • Utilise manual machining facilities.
  • Building and testing various prototypes.
  • Undertake quality control of externally manufactured components.
  • Manufacturing and servicing of press tooling.
  • Fabrication and machining of fixtures for welding and machining of components.
  • Provide knowledge and expertise relating to press tooling, plastic injection moulding, material selection and heat treatments and process improvements.
  • Maintain, setup tooling, program and utilise our CNC machining centre. It is mainly production orientated but requires special jobs to be machined from time to time.

    This role will also support their Stainless Fabrication and Heat Exchanger departments by:

    • Manufacturing small runs of componentry for projects in hand.
    • Design and manufacture tooling for their CNC sheet metal manufacturing facility.
    • Servicing and maintaining of complex multistage drawing, punching and shearing tooling for refrigeration fin manufacturing.
    • Manufacturing machine components to either modify, improve or maintain their existing plant and equipment.
    • Setup and support other staff members to use manufacturing equipment.
    • Maintain or repair factory machinery as required.
    • Being actively involved in process improvements.

        In this role your sound mechanical knowledge and experience in precision manufacturing will be utilised to support the factory. You will be the given responsibility to make appropriate decisions with the guidance of the manufacturing manager and department supervisors.

        Current workshop hours are Monday to Thursday 6.00am to 4.30pm and overtime is often available on Fridays and where requested.
